Carlo undergo wrist and pelvic surgery.Topspur News the Spurs News site

The 36-year-old Italian fractured both wrists and injured his pelvis after crashing his motorbike in London yesterday.

Tottenham’s head of medical services Wayne Diesel said on the official club website: “We have leading specialists looking after Carlo and once surgery is complete and his recovery is under way, we will have a clearer idea of how many weeks he will be out for.” Carlo

Manager Harry Redknapp added: “We are all sorry to hear about what has happened to Carlo. We are just relieved that the injuries that he sustained in the accident weren’t more serious.

“Everyone at the club sends their best wishes and we hope that he recovers soon.”

Cudicini arrived at White Hart Lane last January on a free transfer following a decade at Chelsea.

He made his name with the Blues, joining the club from Castel Di Sangro in 1999, initially on loan before signing a permanent deal.

He was first choice for four seasons at Stamford Bridge before the arrival of Petr Cech.

But the Italian has made just eight appearances this season and his current contract expires next summer.

Police described the Italian’s injuries as “potentially life-changing” yesterday, sparking fears for his career.

Cudicini had to be airlifted to Whipps Cross hospital in east London with two broken wrists and an injured – thought to be fractured – pelvis.

But Tottenham were quick to play down suggestions that Cudicini may never play again and maintained they were waiting for the results of scans.

He is now described as being in a ’stable’ condition after being transferred to a private hospital.

Tottenham are expected to provide further details on Cudicini’s condition later today.

Many of his team-mates were unaware of the accident until late yesterday afternoon as they are currently away on international duty.

But they immediately sent their best wishes as did fans who bombarded the club with messages.

Chelsea were also quick to send their best wishes to their former goalkeeper yesterday. A statement on the Blues’ website read: “Chelsea Football Club sends our best wishes for a full and speedy recovery to Carlo Cudicini who has been involved in a road accident today.”

Cudicini has made eight appearances for Tottenham this season and although the club have been persistently linked with a move for Portsmouth’s David James, he had insisted only last month that he wanted to stay beyond next summer when his current deal runs out.

He said: “My contract is about to expire, but I would be happy to remain at Tottenham. However, I would consider Italian clubs if that wasn’t possible.”
